I should get out more. |
Like most people I have an ADSL router connected to broadband on my telephone line. And like most people I configured the IP address/mask/default route etc. But I didn't bother thinking about the MTU, that was until last night during a video conference. My ethernet was configured to use the standard MTU of 1500.
It's pretty obvious really but I never gave it a thought. What is the MTU of the PPP connection?? If the ethernet card is configured to a higher MTU than the PPP connection, we will get fragmentation. So the question is what should the MTU be set to? Have a look at this site here My current setting is 1458 (edited) but I am going to do some pinging when I get home, and check for fragmentation. It is well worth checking this because the performance increase is very significant especially with video streaming. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Dogbert, "Free will is an illusion. How do I get out of here? |
A very good site for Broadband users Dogbert
Lots of info on the myriad of settings and parameters you can joyfully mess up on your router. I've already got an explanation to why an AOL connection didn't work (AOL only support MTU values less than 1400!). Network technology is fast becoming the new Alchemy. I'm off to put on my sandals, geek glasses (repaired in the corner with Sellotape), and helmet with a propeller on top - happy tweaking! FT |
