Can you answer this question which everyone else seems to think impossible.

A customer of mine has an Alpha Server 8400 (GS140), they are struggling with backups and want to attach an MSL6030 LVD/SE

Do you know of a card that the GS140 will support and that will interface the MSL6030.

Thanks and Regards,

Thanks for the supported options list.
The descriptions in the list are slightly wrong, it reads:
PCI-based one port Ultra SCSI
Single-ended how adapter KZPBA-CA
PCI-based one port Ultra SCSI
Single-ended how adapter KZPBA-CB

Also, I'm not sure what Single ended how adapter means? I think it should read as

Thanks

I think the supported adapter list has a mistake on it, it reads:
PCI-based one port Ultra SCSI Single-ended how adapter KZPBA-CA
PCI-based one port Ultra SCSI Single-ended how adapter KZPBA-CB

I think it should read:
PCI-based one port Ultra SCSI Single-ended how adapter KZPBA-CA
PCI-based one port Ultra SCS

The MSL6030 is probably not a good match for this box - Depending which flavour of Ultrium tape drive is installed. Ultrium 1 will require a SCSI bandwidth of something like 30MB/sec (ballpark figures!) - Ultrium 2 about 60MB/sec, and Ultrium 3 about 160 MB/sec. The fastest adapter in the supported options list is ULTRA SCSI at 40MB/sec. MSL6030 will typically be at least Ultrium 2 drives.

You'll probably find the library won't stream data too well, resulting in "shoeshining" (excessive positioning operations) - which means rubbish performance, and potentially excessive wear on tape heads & media..........not a good scenario !.

Might be better in the long run to back up to an intermediate disk, maybe over a network - then use a faster server/SCSI subsystem, to back up to tape. Either that, or (crazy as it may sound!) use a 'slower' tape library.
