I have at this moment Tru64 Unix installed on several Alpha servers in our Test room. One of these systems has a very old VGA adapter with 1MB memory, therefore the screen resolution is 640 x 480 and no colours, only different shades of gray. I have changed the VGA adapter for an Elsa GLoria, which was working fine in another system, (1024 x 768 plus good colours). Now after re-booting my system with the new video adapter when it should start displaying the x-console it doesn't, in fact i get no display whatever. I replace the VGA adapter for the old one and everything is back as was previous. Is there some sort of x-config utility that i can use to setup the new VGA adapter or must i re-install the OS again.

Regards

Hi Bob
I think you may need to reconfigure the kernel. To see if this is the case, boot the system using genvmunix.

>>boot -file genvmunix

If it is the kernel, you will get X Window running in full colour using this generic kernel. To modify the existing kernel you will need to do the following:

Using the generic kernel:---

sizer -n fred

Look at the output file /tmp/fred, you should see in the section on static drivers a reference to your graphics card. Edit the configuration file in /sys/conf, it will have the same name as the systems hostname in uppercase characters. You will need to put a one line entry the same as it appears in /tmp/fred in the static drivers section near the end of the file. Then run:

doconfig -c ?????????

where ???????? is the name of your config file

When doconfig completes it will tell you to copy the new kernel into the / directory.

Once you have copied the file shutdown the system and then from SRM boot as you would normally.

I hope this helps
