I recently decided to install myself an alternative environment on a PC at work and loaded RedHat Enterprise Linux 3 on a Dell 4700 PC. Install went reasonably cleanly apart from a missing driver for the Intel ICH5 chipset but obtained that from the Intel website and all OK - dual boot Windows XP Pro and RHEL V3.

Flushed with this success I decided to do do the same on a Dell 5000 at home - similar machine but with USB keyboard and rodent - no PS/2 available. First install - no keyboard or mouse - moved keyboard and mouse to root USB port & tried again - keyboard (some of the time) but no mouse. Tried configuring the correct mouse, tried a Microsoft Optical Intellimouse, but still no mouse

After several sad evenings in front of the PC I still can't use the mouse and I'm considering installing SuSE Linux Enterprise 9.

Any Linux gurus out there who can advise me on either fixing RedHat EL3 or is SuSE any better at configuring USB devices?

The problem turned out to be a conflict between the ehci-hcd and usb-ohci modules that was causing the problem.

The solution is to remove the alias for
ehci-hcd from your modules.conf file.

If this doesn't work then delete the ehci-hcd.o file from
/lib/modules/<kernel>/kernel/drivers/usb/host, remake initrd (mkinitrd /boot/<kernel>.img <lib/modules/kernel directory name> ) and reboot the system.
