I swapped out the chassis and one of two msa1000 controllers within our SAN to troubleshoot some on-going issues I have been having.
During the swap one of my drives failed. The array then proceeded to rebuild using the on-line spare. The rebuild however failed at about 48%. I therefore removed the on-line spare and replaced the failed drive. The array then proceeded to rebuild on the replaced drive only to fail again at about 48%. I then removed this drive and replaced the on-line spare and again the same happened. Why is this array failing to rebuild when both the failed drive and on-line spare have been replaced? HELP!! |

what firmware level is your msa controller at ?
should be at a minimum 4.48 although newer releases are available now depending if you want active / passive or active /active configuration. |

Both controllers now at 4.48 and still the volume won't recover, Rebuild gets to 47% and then fails.
Any ideas????? |

Forum Administrator How do I get out of here? |
Hello Jez
I will ask around for you, but it may be worthwile having a look at the HP itrc site, rebuilding after a failure seems to be a common problem |

How do I get out of here? |
Hello again Jez,
looks like you're running "reduced" on this array - so first thing is to get a usable backup of the data. It may sound like stating the obvious, but it looks like you have some corruption that is causing the rebuild to fail. It could mean you may have to "zap" your configuration and start again with a restore from backup. I'll do some research on this and post as soon as I can get some more information. FT |

Just to let you know what happened.....
Original problem caused simply by dodgy fibre cables. Swapping chassis to troubleshoot problem caused 3 drive failures on one array. the on-line was used plus the raid 5 parity drive meaning that I was running on no -redundancy. The array rebuild was failing due to a third drive having read issues on several sectors. Luckily the san did not actually fail the drive or I would have lost 1.2TB. In teh end the msa1000 deubugging utility revealed the scsi sense codes which showed which drive had the errors. I build spare servers moved across all data and rebuilt san from scratch. Al now working ok. Thanks for the help. |
